The coming weekend is expected to be colder and wetter than usual, with daytime temperatures struggling to reach 15°C in most parts of the country, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Meteorologist Heikki Sinisalo said temperatures will range from 10 to 17°C, with the coldest conditions in the north. “In northern Lapland, daytime highs may stay below 10 degrees,” he said.

Saturday will be especially wet in southern and central Finland. Showers are expected to continue into Sunday, which looks to be the rainiest day of the weekend.

There is also a risk of frost late Friday night and early Saturday morning, particularly in more southern parts of the country. Frost at ground level during the growing season can cause damage to plants and crops.

“Ground frost is possible in relatively southern areas, just as we’ve seen in previous nights,” Sinisalo said.

The west coast faces the highest risk of intense showers. Localised downpours may bring up to 10 millimetres of rain per hour.

In eastern Finland, there is a possibility of thunder on Sunday, but forecasts do not currently indicate any severe storm activity. “Eastern Finland looks slightly more likely to see thunder, but no widespread lightning is expected,” Sinisalo added.

Sunday’s temperatures may not exceed 15°C in many regions due to persistent cloud cover and rainfall.

No return of warm summer weather is in sight. “Last September had eight hot days, so anything is still possible. But when looking a week ahead, there’s no sign of summer temperatures returning,” said Sinisalo.

A yellow wind warning has been issued for the southwestern sea area on Sunday. There is a 30 percent chance of strong northwesterly winds from morning until evening. No warnings are currently in effect for land areas, but the situation remains under review.
