A conscript serving in the Kainuu Brigade died on Monday morning during a military exercise in Vuosanka, Kuhmo.
The incident occurred on the first day of the brigade’s battle drill. The Finnish Defence Forces confirmed the death in a public statement. The conscript’s family has been informed.
The Kainuu Brigade said the events leading to the death did not pose a threat to others.
The cause of death is under investigation by Oulu Police, who are treating the matter as a standard cause of death inquiry. No crime is suspected.
The death was discovered early on Monday morning near the Vuosanka training area, according to police. Some participants were still en route to the location when the event took place.
Crisis counselling is available to all exercise participants, regardless of their proximity to the event. The deceased conscript’s unit was pulled from the exercise. Personnel held an immediate debrief session with those most affected.
The Kainuu Brigade is conducting the exercise at the Vuosanka training ground, which is located in a remote area of northeastern Finland. The battle drill involves conscripts and professional personnel. The deceased soldier had been participating in the drill as part of regular military service.
The Finnish Army and police both stated that the case does not involve an accident or foul play. No weapons malfunction or training error has been identified.
The Kainuu Brigade will lower flags to half-mast on Tuesday at its Hoikankangas garrison in Kajaani to honour the deceased.
