A Russian man who crossed into Finland without permission in June has been removed from the country, according to a statement from the North Karelia Border Guard. The agency confirmed that he had a military background and said it was releasing details in response to public claims about his identity that surfaced over the summer.

The man entered Finland near Kitee on 17 June. He was detected by the Border Guard’s surveillance systems before patrols detained him close to the frontier. Officials described the response as routine and said the man’s background was examined from the first moments of the operation.

Finnish newspaper Yle previously identified the man as Jevgeni, a Russian citizen who had presented himself on social media as a fighter for the Wagner paramilitary group. In July, Yle reported that the authorities were holding a former member of the organisation. Images from his online accounts showed him in military clothing and referring to his role in fighting in eastern Ukraine.

reported that it had located several images appearing to place Jevgeni in eastern Ukraine. Some of the posts included statements in which he criticised Russian military leadership. His social media activity suggested he had presented himself openly as a Wagner fighter before leaving Russia.
