				Finland moves to tighten citizenship rules and expand revocation grounds

Finland is set to introduce stricter conditions for acquiring and retaining citizenship following a government proposal submitted to Parliament on Thursday.

The proposed amendments would raise the bar for applicants by tightening requirements related to identity verification, financial self-sufficiency, and criminal history. The new legislation is expected to come into force on 1 October 2025.

Interior Minister Mari Rantanen said the changes are designed to ensure that Finnish citizenship reflects integration and respect for Finnish laws.

“Finnish citizenship is not something that can be granted automatically. It requires successful integration, work, and compliance with the rules of Finnish society,” she said in a statement.
