Finland has completed a successful 5G technology trial that enables secure mobile communications for defence operations across national borders.

The test, carried out by Telia, Nokia, and the Finnish Defence Forces during a Nordic training exercise in March, demonstrated a 5G network slice operating across the commercial networks of three countries. The experiment is seen as a significant step in strengthening defence capabilities within the NATO region.

The slice, managed by an intelligent system, ensured uninterrupted communication, maintained information security, and operated reliably in demanding conditions. It was designed to support the mobile requirements of service personnel during joint international operations, where secure and consistent connectivity is critical.

“This testing experiment marks a major landmark in enhancement of 5G dual-use opportunities in defence use and also in the extension of communications readiness necessary in the NATO area,” said Major General Jarmo Vähätiitto, Assistant Chief of Staff for C5 systems at Defence Command. “We are satisfied with co-operation with Telia and Nokia in this programme and eager to examine new opportunities for integrating 5G as part of our activity.”

The simulation used Nokia’s 5G technology and Telia’s commercial infrastructure. It forms part of Finland’s broader push to merge field communication networks with commercial technology into a hybrid system capable of supporting both civilian and military needs.

Finland’s defence strategy places growing emphasis on digital infrastructure. The 5G solution allows secure access to operational applications in mobile environments, including those outside Finnish territory. This supports NATO’s interoperability goals and enhances the readiness of the Finnish Defence Forces to respond rapidly and flexibly.

In addition to the experiment, Finland is already developing advanced networks for public safety. The VIRVE 2 system, based on 5G technology, was built in collaboration between Erillisverkot and Elisa. It allows secure and efficient inter-agency communication.

The Defence Forces plan to continue testing commercial mobile technologies during national training exercises in spring 2025. These exercises are part of a long-term effort to improve field communication systems by integrating commercially available solutions.

The test signals Finland’s growing role as a 5G innovator, particularly in adapting next-generation mobile networks for critical infrastructure and national security purposes.
