Finland’s Tax Administration will pay more than €1.4 billion in refunds to approximately 1.5 million taxpayers on Wednesday. This marks the largest single tax refund payout of the year, officials said. The average refund from July to September stands at €734. This is slightly higher than during the same period in 2024, according to figures published by Verohallinto.

Regional differences remain significant. Åland tops the list with the highest average refund at €802, while taxpayers in North Karelia receive the lowest, averaging €659.

The refund cycle has shifted in recent years. Previously paid at the end of the calendar year, refunds are now issued in the summer, providing a mid-year payment that reaches bank accounts during July, August, and September.

In contrast to the incoming refunds, nearly half a million people are due to pay outstanding taxes early next week.

On Monday, approximately 416,000 taxpayers must settle back taxes totalling €336 million. These payments, referred to in Finland as jäännösverot, are typically issued when withholding during the year has been insufficient to cover actual tax obligations.

The average back tax bill between July and September is €1,230 per person, around €100 higher than in 2024.

Åland again records the highest average payment, at €1,918 per taxpayer. The lowest average is in Päijät-Häme, where back taxes come to €903.

Taxpayers can review their individual payment or refund details through the Tax Administration’s MyTax online portal. The agency continues to warn against fraudulent messages impersonating official notices and advises users to avoid clicking on suspicious links.

The disbursement and payment figures highlight ongoing regional variation in income and tax profiles across Finland. Verohallinto has not issued specific reasons for the increases in average refund and back tax amounts compared to last year.

The next refund payment dates vary depending on when each taxpayer’s return was processed, but the coming Wednesday represents the highest volume for 2025.

Verohallinto confirmed that further refund and back tax payments will continue into September. Those with unpaid taxes are encouraged to confirm deadlines and amounts via official channels to avoid penalties.
