Finnish lawmakers express concern about men’s views on violence

VIOLENCE against women is a stain on Finnish society, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) stated on Tuesday.
Orpo issued his statement in response to a survey published on Tuesday by the Coalition of Finnish Women’s Association (Nytkis). The survey found that as many as a quarter of under 35-year-old men in the country believe women may deserve the violence they face because of the way they look, dress or behave.
“The entire society must work hard so that we can change these twisted attitudes and weed out violence against women,” the prime minister wrote on Instagram. “Men have to shoulder their responsibility.”
The survey also discovered that half of men are of the opinion that feminist movements restrict the rights of men and 60 per cent that gender equality has already been achieved in Finland.
The results provoked a flood of comments from lawmakers on Tuesday, according to Helsingin Sanomat.
