A Finnish man has been arrested for allegedly crossing the border into Russia and returning without authorisation, the Southeast Finland Border Guard said on Friday.
The suspect was apprehended in the Pitkäpohja area of Parikkala after technical surveillance systems triggered an alert. Border patrols detained the man shortly after the breach.
“The man is suspected of illegally crossing the state border in terrain from Finland to Russia and back to Finland,” the Border Guard confirmed in a statement.
Authorities said the regional border delegate in Southeast Finland has contacted their counterpart in Russia’s Vyborg region regarding the case. An investigation is ongoing. No further details have been provided.
This is the latest in a string of incidents along Finland’s eastern border. On 17 June, a foreign national was caught by the Eastern Finland Border Guard in North Karelia for allegedly entering from Russia illegally.
Finland closed all official crossing points with Russia at the end of 2023 following concerns over orchestrated migration. Under emergency powers, border guards have been authorised to turn away asylum seekers arriving from Russia.
In January, a minor was detected crossing the border illegally in Imatra’s Karhusuo area. The individual remained on the Russian side as of early February.
The Finnish authorities continue to maintain heightened security along the eastern frontier due to ongoing concerns over unauthorised entries.
