Finland’s first recorded snowfall of the season appeared in Kilpisjärvi, Lapland, following a prolonged period of mild autumn weather, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

By 9 a.m. on Wednesday, six centimetres of snow had settled in the area. Meteorologist Heikki Sinisalo confirmed the reading and said the snow could remain at least until Friday.

“Elsewhere in Finland, temperatures will rise clearly above zero today, but Kilpisjärvi is on the borderline,” Sinisalo said.

Temperatures in Kilpisjärvi are expected to stay close to freezing through the week, but conditions remain uncertain.

For snowfall to be officially recorded as the season’s first, at least one centimetre of snow must be measured on the ground at 9 a.m., according to guidelines from the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

The specific measurement time ensures long-term comparability in snowfall records across decades.

The Institute announced earlier this week that the first snow was running late this year due to warmer-than-usual autumn conditions throughout the country.
