Four people were found dead after a detached house burned down in the village of Louhi, Savonlinna, on Finland’s Independence Day.
Police suspect the victims were the residents of the home, which according to public information had recently been rented by a mother and her three young children.
The fire was reported shortly after 8:00 on the morning of 6 December. Emergency services arrived to find the house fully engulfed.
Efforts to control the blaze continued into the afternoon. The house was destroyed.
Police said the remains of the four individuals were discovered inside the structure. Identification of the victims will be carried out by forensic experts. Investigators have not confirmed whether the dead were all from the same family.
“We suspect the deceased are the people registered at the address,” Markku Kärpänen, the lead investigator from the Eastern Finland Police Department, told Yle. “Final confirmation will come from the forensic autopsy.”
A neighbour, interviewed by Iltalehti, reported hearing shouting from the house minutes before the fire was visible. “First I heard a man yelling, then a woman calling for help,” said Auri Kähkönen, who placed the emergency call at 8:03. “After that, I heard the sound of breaking glass, and then saw smoke rising from the building.”
Kähkönen said she had walked past the property the previous evening and noticed many people and parked vehicles outside. She recalled hearing children’s voices from inside.
Kärpänen told Yle that no suspects had been detained, and all investigative lines remain open. He also said that the possibility of a criminal act has not been ruled out.
The property had been listed for sale and later rented. According to Iltalehti, the mother and her children had moved into the house less than two months before the fire.
