Helsinki saw its first official snowfall of the winter on Thursday morning, as two centimetres of snow were measured at the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s Kumpula station at 8am.
According to the institute’s standard, the season’s first snow is declared when a minimum of one centimetre is present at the ground observation point at 8am. This marks the beginning of winter for the capital region, despite rising temperatures expected to melt the snow by midday.
Snow began falling on Wednesday evening.
By morning, much of the city’s surface had been covered, briefly transforming parks and streets before the thaw.
Kaisaniemi station reported +3°C at 8am. Slush and mud quickly replaced snow near the central railway station.
The forecast for the rest of the week includes a mix of rain, sleet and snow, according to FMI meteorologist Pinja Rauhamäki. She said temperatures would remain just above freezing during the day, with a slight chance of freezing conditions at night.
“There is a possibility of snow again later on Thursday evening. Precipitation will vary in form across the region,” she said.
Another low-pressure system is expected to arrive on Saturday, bringing further precipitation to southern Finland. Current models show temperatures hovering around zero, which could lead to additional snowfall in the capital.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute issued a warning for hazardous road conditions across Uusimaa. The agency urged drivers to prepare for rapidly changing surfaces and reduced visibility.
According to Finland’s Transport and Communications Agency Traficom, winter tyres must be used from 1 November to 31 March if the weather or road conditions require it.
Over the next ten days, the weather is expected to remain unstable. Forecasters predict light snowfall at intervals, with daytime temperatures around zero or slightly above. Brief cold spells are possible towards the end of the forecast period.
