Helsinki to host Matka Travel Fair 2024, showcasing global and Finnish destinations

The Matka Travel Fair, Northern Europe’s largest travel trade event, is set to bring a gust of international flair to Helsinki this week. The fair, taking place at the Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre from January 19-21, 2024 (with January 18 reserved for trade professionals), is expected to draw nearly 900 exhibitors from around 70 countries, including a comprehensive representation of Finland’s diverse travel offerings.

This year’s fair will introduce visitors to a wide array of holiday destinations ranging from local Finnish attractions in Inari-Saariselkä to exotic cruises on the Congo River. Notably, new destinations such as Albania, Gambia, and Mongolia will make their debut, alongside returning participants like Bulgaria and Discover America. Finnish regions, including North Karelia and Koli National Park, will feature prominently, showcasing their unique travel services.

Global cultures will be vividly represented, with stands from Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda, and Inspiration Africa bringing the African continent’s warmth to Helsinki. Asian countries like Japan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand will display their distinct aesthetics, while popular European destinations for Finns, including Spain, Greece, Croatia, Cyprus, Portugal, and Poland, will also be prominently featured.

Noora Haatainen, Business Manager of the Matka Travel Fair, anticipates a large turnout, as people seek inspiration for their travel plans. “Our programme stages offer a magnificent array of routes, tips, information, and culture. Sunday will be specially tailored for families, making it a perfect outing for all ages,” Haatainen adds.

One of the highlights is the expansive stand of North Karelia, showcasing the region’s natural beauty and cultural attractions like the Lintula Monasteries and the Nightwish Exhibition Centre. Major Finnish cities and smaller localities, such as those in the Go Saimaa region, will also be on display, revealing hidden gems across the country.

The fair will not only focus on destinations but also on different aspects of travel experiences. The Adventure Stage will discuss transformative travel and responsible choices, while the Second Home area will cater to those interested in acquiring a holiday home abroad. The Meet the World Stage will feature cultural performances and travel tips, and the Sunny Village and We Love Cruises areas will offer insights into long-haul destinations and international cruise trips.

A special emphasis this year is on culinary experiences, with the Tasty Travel and Mediterranea Stage allowing visitors to indulge in global flavors, highlighting food as a significant travel motivator.

The Matka Travel Fair, in its 36th iteration, not only offers an expansive view of the travel industry but also serves as a testament to Finland’s growing role as a hub for global tourism and cultural exchange.
