More than half of immigrant women in Finland believe the societal atmosphere has deteriorated in recent years, according to a new survey published by E2 Tutkimus.

The survey found that 52 percent of respondents felt the societal climate had worsened for immigrants, while 22 percent saw improvement. Many pointed to economic pressures, increased unemployment and the perceived exclusion of foreigners from the labour market.

The study was commissioned by trade union confederation STTK and focused on barriers and support structures affecting highly educated immigrant women. Alongside the survey, researchers conducted interviews with immigrant women and employment and integration professionals.

Labour market conditions were seen as a major concern. Respondents described reduced job opportunities and a growing sense of rejection, particularly in connection to recent economic policy decisions and structural unemployment.

Open responses linked the worsening atmosphere to the current government and its policy approach. Others criticised employer attitudes and structural limitations within the labour market. Economic difficulties were seen as disproportionately affecting immigrants, especially women seeking work.

At the same time, some participants highlighted positive aspects of working life in Finland, including low workplace hierarchies and a clear separation between work and personal time.

Public services for employment and integration were criticised for being overstretched. According to professionals interviewed, the 2025 shift of employment services from the state to municipalities has added pressure to local staff. Budget cuts have also affected both employment and integration services under the current government.
