National Coalition Party MP Matias Marttinen will replace Arto Satonen as Finland’s Minister of Employment next week, the government announced on Monday.
Marttinen, 34, will assume the role on Tuesday 6 May. He is a second-term MP from Rauma, on Finland’s west coast, and holds a master’s degree in political science. He has also chaired the NCP’s parliamentary group, meaning the party will need to appoint a new leader for that position.
The government said the National Coalition Party agreed to the change after the recent municipal and county council elections. According to the government, the midterm transition was planned from the beginning of Satonen’s ministerial term.
Satonen will remain in Parliament but has applied to become the new Director General of the Social Insurance Institution Kela. An announcement regarding the appointment is expected on Tuesday.
Other ministerial shifts are also underway. NCP MP Sakari Puisto is set to become Finland’s new Minister of Economic Affairs, replacing Wille Rydman of the Finns Party.
Meanwhile, Mika Poutala of the Christian Democrats will take over as Minister of Youth, Sport and Physical Activity from Sandra Bergqvist of the Swedish People’s Party. The four-party coalition had agreed to rotate that post halfway through the government’s term.
