Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has detained several individuals in southeastern Finland on suspicion of financing terrorism. The arrests took place in Ruokolahti, near the Russian border, during a police operation on Tuesday.
Senior Detective Superintendent Mikko Laaksonen, who is leading the investigation, confirmed the detentions to Yle but declined to provide further information, citing the early stage of the inquiry.
The police operation unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday near Route 62, close to the intersection with Sulkavantie.
The Central Criminal Police (Keskusrikospoliisi, or KRP) issued a public statement on Tuesday evening, confirming the arrests as part of an ongoing pre-trial investigation. The suspected offence is the financing of terrorism.
Laaksonen confirmed to Yle that the Ruokolahti operation is part of the same investigation. He did not say whether any arrests had taken place outside the area or whether more suspects might be involved. The police have not released information about the nationalities of those detained or the specific nature of the suspected financing activity.
The authorities have stated that further details will be disclosed only when the investigation permits.
