A mother and her three children died in a house fire in Savonlinna on Finland’s Independence Day. According to information obtained by MTV News, police are treating the incident as a suspected criminal offence and have detained one person in connection with the case.
Emergency services received a call just after 8:00 on Saturday morning, reporting a house on fire in the Louhi area of Savonlinna. The property, a detached single-storey home of about 100 square metres, was already engulfed in flames when first responders arrived.
Authorities later confirmed the discovery of four bodies inside the structure. Police suspect the victims are the mother and her three children, aged between one and three. According to information reported by MTV, the family had only recently moved into the house and were listed as residents.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been officially confirmed. Forensic and legal investigations are ongoing to determine cause of death and the origin of the fire.
On Sunday, mourners left candles and flowers at the edge of the property. Local church officials organised a memorial service on Monday evening at Kerimäki’s winter church. Pastoral staff offered grief counselling after the service.
Savonlinna city lowered flags to half-mast on Sunday in honour of the victims.
