A 22-year-old man has been remanded in custody on suspicion of murdering his partner and three children in a house fire in Savonlinna, eastern Finland.
The fire occurred early on Independence Day, 6 December, in the Louhi village area of Kerimäki. All four victims were found in the same room of the house. Police suspect the fire was set deliberately.
The South Savo District Court ruled on Wednesday that the man be detained on probable cause on suspicion of four counts of murder and one count of aggravated arson.
The court proceedings were held behind closed doors.
The suspect appeared in court in Mikkeli with his head fully covered by a black winter coat. He remained motionless throughout the hearing.
The court has placed all prosecution demands and judicial reasoning under seal. The suspect is the father of the three children who died in the fire. He has a prior conviction for assault. The deadline to file charges has been set for 21 April 2026.
According to police, the victims included a young woman and her three children, one of whom was born in late 2024. The woman and the children had moved into the house less than two months earlier. The mother was not the legal owner of the property.
Investigators believe the fire was started intentionally. The man has denied the charges.
Documents obtained by Iltalehti reveal that the family had a history with child protection services. The woman had considered applying for a restraining order against the suspect.
Police stated that forensic and technical investigations supported the theory of arson. The man was taken into custody shortly after the incident.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the family’s child protection case remained open at the time of the fire.
