Finland’s President Alexander Stubb formally opened the 2025 parliamentary session on Wednesday, emphasising national security, defence investments, and Finland’s position in a changing global order.
In his address, Stubb warned of challenges posed by US foreign policy, which he described as increasingly transactional rather than multilateral.
He called on Europe to maintain its values while fostering cooperation with Washington.
“Ukraine’s cause is ours,” Stubb said, stressing Finland’s continued support for Ukraine and its long-term integration into NATO and the EU. He also reaffirmed Finland’s commitment to multilateralism while acknowledging the need to navigate shifting geopolitical realities.
Defence spending was another key theme. Stubb highlighted the need for broad political consensus on increased military investments, citing evolving threats and Finland’s NATO obligations.
“Threats require new capabilities, and capabilities require greater re with a passage from Finland’s national poet J. L. Runeberg, underscoring unity and collective responsibility.
“We all work for Finland, together,” he said.
