A routine car transaction escalated into a criminal investigation in Vantaa on Friday evening, prompting a police operation at the Myyrmanni shopping centre.
According to Pia Katajala, a detective chief inspector at the Eastern Uusimaa Police Department, officers were alerted to the incident at 18:40 via the emergency services. The situation unfolded in the underground parking garage of the shopping complex in Myyrmäki.
Police say a group had gathered in the garage to conduct what appeared to be a private vehicle sale. The encounter escalated unexpectedly, resulting in a dangerous situation where several people, including at least one bystander, were reportedly at risk of being struck by a car as the suspect fled the scene at high speed.
“There had been some kind of car sale going on, and for one reason or another, the suspect left the scene in a hurry,” Katajala said. “People were in danger of being hit.”
The suspect, whose identity is known to police, remains at large. The police operation in the area extended late into Friday evening, but as of Saturday morning, the individual had not been apprehended. Authorities say there is no threat to the general public at this time.
The case is being investigated as an attempted manslaughter and aggravated endangerment of traffic safety. No fatalities have been reported, though police have declined to comment on possible injuries.
Witnesses were present during the incident, and investigators are gathering statements. The police have not disclosed details about the vehicle used or how many people were present in the garage at the time.
Katajala said the investigation is still in its early stages. The Eastern Uusimaa Police Department continues efforts to locate the suspect and clarify the sequence of events.
