Finland will begin September with summer-like conditions, according to forecasts from the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) and weather service Foreca.

After a period of chilly nights and frost in Lapland, airflows have shifted to the south, carrying warmer air across the country. The high-pressure system will keep conditions largely dry and sunny at the start of the week, with temperatures climbing steadily.

On Monday and Tuesday, daytime highs will range between 15 and 20°C nationwide, reaching around 22°C in southern and western areas. Nights will also turn milder, with readings above 10°C as far north as Lapland, reducing the risk of frost.

From Wednesday, a low-pressure system will bring widespread rain moving eastwards from the west. Showers may include thunderstorms, and temperatures will dip slightly, falling to 11–15°C in rainy areas and remaining just below 20°C elsewhere. Rain is expected to linger in the east and north into Thursday before easing.

Meteorologist Pinja Rauhamäki told Finnish news agency STT that Friday is likely to be the warmest day of the week, with highs of 22–23°C possible across southern Finland and even further north. “The warmer air will spread from the south and west to the east as well,” she said, noting that forecasts may still change.

Foreca meteorologist Anna Latvala added that a brief heatwave cannot be ruled out later in the week. To qualify, at least one weather station must register 25.1°C. “The likelihood depends on how much warm air arrives from the south and whether skies remain clear,” Latvala said in a weather blog.

Although forecasters emphasise that conditions will be close to seasonal averages for southern Finland, the return of warmth marks a contrast with recent nights when temperatures dipped below freezing in Lapland. Last year, Finland recorded eight official heat days in September, setting a new record for the month.

If current predictions hold, Finland could see another unusually warm start to autumn, with dry, sunny weather dominating the weekend and daytime temperatures in the south widely exceeding 20°C.
