Finland’s long-standing shortage of nurses has reversed into a surplus, the national broadcaster Yle reports. The change follows widespread financial constraints across welfare regions and restructuring in the social and healthcare sector.
Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment figures show a sharp rise in unemployment among practical nurses. The vacancy rate dropped from 8 percent in early 2023 to 2 percent in recent months. Unemployment among practical nurses rose from 5 to over 7 percent in the same period.
Liisa Larja, senior specialist at the ministry, said that demand pressures had eased. “The labour availability problem has temporarily disappeared,” she said.
Welfare regions across Finland have scaled back recruitment and launched redundancy talks due to financial strain. The reduced number of available positions has led to rising competition among healthcare workers.
