The University of Eastern Finland has been given its largest-ever donation, more than €3 million, from the estate of Lapinlahti farmer and war veteran Martti Miettinen.
Miettinen, who died earlier this year aged over 100, directed in his will that the money be used to establish the Martti Miettinen Fund. The fund’s investment returns will support scientific research and teaching at the university’s Kuopio campus.
According to the university, the initial capital comes mainly from Miettinen’s long-term stock market investments, and he wished for the fund to grow further through continued investment.
“We are very grateful that people see science and university education as so important that they want to make such bequests,” said Petri Rintamäki, the university’s director of legal affairs.
Rintamäki noted the donation’s importance amid planned state funding cuts to universities. “Private donations are important to us in this situation,” he said.
