The Finnish Immigration Service has restarted decisions on asylum applications lodged by Syrian nationals, following a pause of more than nine months.

The process was suspended in December 2024 after major changes in Syria’s security situation. Updated assessments now suggest conditions have stabilised enough to allow individual case reviews to continue.

Antti Lehtinen, head of the international protection unit at the Immigration Service, said in a statement that the decision was based on extensive monitoring of both national and international reports.

“Country information shows the security situation has reached a level that allows us to resume decisions that had to be suspended due to earlier changes,” Lehtinen said.

The agency currently has 320 pending Syrian asylum cases. Each application will be considered individually, with protection needs evaluated against the most recent country-of-origin information.

The Immigration Service regularly updates its assessments of security conditions worldwide, which form the basis of asylum decisions. Similar resumptions of Syrian asylum processing have also recently taken place in other EU member states.
