A Russian-aligned hacker group has claimed responsibility for a series of denial-of-service attacks against Finnish government institutions, according to Finland’s Cybersecurity Centre under Traficom, Finnish National Broadcaster Yle reports.
The group, known as NoName 057(16), has disrupted access to several websites, including the Finnish Ministry of Defence. The attacks began on Monday and have continued for four consecutive days.
Juhani Eronen, lead specialist at the Cybersecurity Centre, confirmed the sustained nature of the attacks.
“Finland and Finnish websites have been on the group’s list since Monday,” Eronen told Finnish broadcaster Yle.
According to Eronen, the attacks are standard denial-of-service operations intended to overload web services and block legitimate users. He said the group uses high volumes of internet traffic from multiple reportedly dismantled parts of the group’s network and arrested several individuals in multiple countries. It also identified thousands of supporters of the group.
Eronen said that such law enforcement actions can limit the group’s activity and lead to criminal accountability. Still, he warned that new members are likely to be recruited.
“As long as there are people motivated by ideology to carry out these attacks, there will be more,” Eronen said.
