Police in Helsinki reported a surge in suspected drug offences at the Flow Festival, with the first day’s cases nearly equalling the total from the entire event in 2024.

The three-day festival in Suvilahti opened on Friday and features a mix of Finnish and international artists. Warm, sunny weather drew large crowds for the second day on Saturday.

The Helsinki Police Command Centre said most of its work on the opening day related to suspected drug crimes, along with a smaller number of public order disturbances.

Officers stressed that the figures are preliminary and that all cases will be investigated. Details on the substances involved were not disclosed. Confirmation will come from laboratory testing by the National Bureau of Investigation, after which any penalties will be determined.

Last year’s festival saw significantly fewer drug-related incidents, according to police.

An Iltalehti reporter on site Friday used drug-detection swabs in five portable toilets, finding cocaine residue in one. A similar test carried out by the newspaper at the 2024 festival also detected traces of narcotics.
