A Finnish Defence Forces military truck veered off the road and overturned in Raasepori on Sunday, injuring several conscripts taking part in the ongoing Freezing Winds 25 exercise.
The vehicle belonged to the Rannikkoprikaati, or Coastal Brigade, which is part of the Finnish Navy. According to authorities, the truck was carrying 13 people when it drove off Perniöntie road and ended up in a roadside ditch around 12:45 p.m.
One conscript suffered serious injuries and was airlifted by helicopter to Meilahti Hospital in Helsinki. The others sustained less severe injuries and were taken to local hospitals for examination and treatment.
Western-Uusimaa Police confirmed no lives were at risk based on initial medical assessments. Rescue and police units responded in force, with 15 fire and rescue vehicles deployed to the site, along with several police units.
The accident took place between Kuninkaantie and Trollshovdantie. The cause remains unclear. Road conditions and other contributing factors were still under review as of Sunday afternoon.
Police suspect the driver of the military truck of endangering traffic safety and causing injury. An investigation has been opened.
The Freezing Winds 25 exercise involves both conscripts and reservists from Finland and includes international participants. It is one of the Navy’s major training operations this year.
Photographs from the scene showed the military transport vehicle on its side and a recovery operation underway. Traffic on Perniöntie was disrupted for over an hour, with one lane closed, according to Fintraffic.
