A person crossed the border from Russia into Finland without authorisation on Thursday morning, prompting an ongoing search operation by the Southeast Finland Border Guard in the Imatra region.

The incident took place during the morning hours. According to a statement issued by the Border Guard, the person crossed from the direction of Russia into Imatra in South Karelia, near the recently completed border fence in Räikkölä.

The Border Guard deployed both vehicles and a helicopter to search the area. Units have been moving across the region throughout the day.

Southeast Finland’s regional border commissioner contacted his counterpart in Russia’s Vyborg region following the incident, in accordance with standard cross-border communication procedures.

In a public notice, the Border Guard requested that residents report any unusual sightings or activity to its operations centre via telephone at 0295 422 012.

The crossing was detected by surveillance systems used by the Southeast Finland Border Guard, which monitors the region with a combination of ground patrols, sensor systems, and aerial units.

The Imatra section of the Finnish-Russian border was reinforced earlier in 2025 as part of Finland’s wider strategy to tighten external borders. The new fence structure, seen in the Räikkölä sector, was constructed to manage unauthorised crossings and enhance early detection.

The Southeast Finland Border Guard confirmed the operation remains active and advised residents to avoid interfering with patrol units.
