Calm and unseasonably mild weather is forecast to continue across Finland into early October, following a shift in air currents and the strengthening of a high-pressure system.

According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s forecast issued on 25 September, temperatures are set to rise in the coming days, reversing the colder pattern observed earlier in the week. A cold air mass from the northwest had pushed daytime highs below 10°C across much of the country, with night-time frost reported as far south as Uusimaa.

“The high-pressure system will strengthen over Finland during Thursday and Friday and is expected to remain in place through the weekend,” said Eetu Rimo, meteorologist at the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Western airflows will bring warmer conditions, with temperatures forecast to reach between 13°C and 17°C across most regions by the weekend. In Lapland, some areas may remain cooler under occasional rain, although conditions there are also expected to clear.

Rainfall will be limited to minor showers in Central and Northern Lapland on Thursday and Friday. Elsewhere, the weather will remain dry. Skies will vary between clear and partly cloudy, with more persistent cloud cover expected in the north early in the period.

Overnight fog may develop in several areas. The fog, combined with light winds, could lower daytime temperatures in locations where cloud cover lingers into the morning hours.

“Fog and low cloud can remain into the day in a weak wind environment, which may affect daytime maximum temperatures,” Rimo said.

Frost is unlikely over the weekend, although localised ground frost may still occur, especially in the south. Night temperatures are also expected to rise.

Long-range forecasts from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts suggest that the high-pressure system may remain in place into the second half of October. According to Foreca’s weather blog, dry conditions are likely to persist and temperatures will stay at or above long-term averages, particularly in southern and central Finland.

Forecasts indicate that this pattern could hold until at least week 43 (20–26 October), although confidence decreases with longer timeframes. Daytime temperatures in southern Finland are expected to stay near typical seasonal levels, while further north they may exceed norms.

Foreca noted that clearer skies and light winds will continue to support overnight fog formation, particularly in inland regions. Some fog banks may not fully disperse until midday, affecting sunshine levels and daily temperature variation.

Despite the dry outlook, occasional rainfall may still occur in northern Finland. Forecasters caution that specific rainfall events or sudden changes in temperature remain possible, particularly if the high-pressure system weakens or shifts.
