Finnish police and the Defence Forces are conducting an extended search operation at a private residence in the Voikkaa district of Kouvola.
The operation has continued for over a week and is connected to an ongoing criminal investigation, according to the Southeast Finland Police Department. According to Ilta-Sanomat, authorities are searching the property for firearms and explosives.
The house is located in a residential area of around 2,500 inhabitants. The scene has seen a significant presence of officials wearing white protective suits. Ilta-Sanomat reported that according to eyewitness accounts, these personnel have been entering and exiting the house while transporting items into two containers placed on the property.
A local resident reported hearing shouted warnings followed by a loud explosion.
“I heard someone shout ‘protect your hearing,’ and shortly after that, there was a blast,” the witness told Ilta-Sanomat.
Other residents have observed items being removed from the premises over several days. The containers on site include one similar to a sealed shipping unit and another resembling a skip. Both are reportedly being filled with materials from the house.
The police have confirmed that the operation poses no threat to the public. They have requested that people avoid the area to ensure safety and maintain operational integrity.
Authorities have not released information about the property owner or whether any arrests have been made.
Police say the search is expected to continue for at least two to three more days.
The Defence Forces have not commented publicly on their role in the operation, which is unusual in scale and duration for a residential property investigation in Finland.
According to current police guidance, further information will be provided when the operation concludes.
