Aircraft noise levels are expected to rise in parts of the Helsinki metropolitan area from Monday as Helsinki Airport begins a major runway renovation project set to last until the end of August.

Airport operator Finavia will close Runway 2 for maintenance and infrastructure work, shifting all take-off and landing traffic to the airport’s two other runways. The closure affects the 2.9-kilometre crosswind runway, built in 1956, which intersects Runway 1. The repairs focus on the southern end of the runway, its taxiways and approach systems.

Finavia also plans to upgrade stormwater drainage over a 2.4-kilometre stretch and renew electrical infrastructure over a 30-kilometre area during the project.

Although the other two runways will remain operational, the reduced capacity may lead to delays during periods of high wind, especially when winds blow from the southeast or northwest, Finavia said in a statement.

The renovation coincides with the peak summer travel season, and rerouted flight paths are likely to increase noise over nearby areas including Kerava, Järvenpää and Tuusula.

The airport’s northern section of Runway 2 was repaired two years ago. The full cost of the current project is estimated at nearly €30 million. Last summer, Runway 3 was temporarily closed for maintenance.
